27 February 2010
Gasteig, Rm 3.142
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Karenne Sylvester
Ning is a social-networking platform quite similar to Facebook or MySpace. In contrast, however, it offers the possibility of working privately within “walled gardens” – thus making it an ideal site for teachers wishing to create collaborative learning environments for their students.
Karenne will lead us through an introduction to collaborative learning and factors to consider in creating e-learning platforms. Specifically, she will introduce Ning and compare it with other sites like Moodle, Yahoo!Groups, Forums etc.
In addition, we’ll experience an actual demonstration of Ning and related collaborative sites, including her students’ Ning examples: essays, reports, PowerPoint slides, discussion forums, working groups, etc. Karenne will also provide insight into who else is Ningin’ it and how this site can be applied to Business English learners.
The all-day session will become hands-on in the afternoon and include the opportunity to develop and test your own site including a review of plug-ins, widgets and add-ons like wikis, tracking twitter and bookmarking links. In other words, you’ll have the opportunity to create an environment for active student participation and autonomous learning.
MELTA workshops are included in the annual membership. Non-members are welcome to join us, however, there will be a €15 fee.
Please register your interest in attending the session by contacting Rod Zook at events@melta.de
